Fasting

Fasting is abstinence from ingesting food, and to some extent, fluids for a specific period of time.

Benefits

Fasts are used as a detoxification method to:
·Increase the elimination of wastes/toxins
·Attain spiritual enlightenment
·To enhance the healing process
·To achieve a sense of mental clarity and physical purity

Cautions

·Diabetics and hypoglycemics should be aware that during a fast, blood sugar levels may drop very low.
·Toxins, such as DDP, which are stored in adipose (fat) cells, may be released during a fast, causing toxicity to the nervous system.
·All fasts should be under the controlled supervision of a qualified practitioner.
·Achiness, headaches, nausea and dizziness often accompany fasts for the first few days. If symptoms persist, terminate the fast.

Tips on Fasting

·Water fasts are not recommended, particularly for people who are doing a fast for the first time. Instead, a juice fast for 3-5 days will be less stressful to the body and provide the most benefit.

·Reduce exercise to short walks and stretching for the duration of the fast. Focus on rests and naps, where possible, throughout the day.

·In preparation for the fast, the evening meal prior to the first day of the fast should consist of only fruits and vegetables.

·Reintroduce solid foods and exercise gradually once the fast is complete.

An Example of a Three Day Fast

If you feel the need to slow the detoxifying process (ie: extreme fatigue, headaches, etc) you may include ½ banana or a quarter of an avocado 3-4 times a day.

· 10 ounces of fruit or vegetable juice, preferably fresh organic produce 3-4 times per day.
· 4-8 glasses of purified water daily
· 1 multivitamin daily
· Vitamin C – 1000mg – 3 times per day
